ST. DAVID, GRENADA — An American woman was found raped and murdered while on vacation on the island of Grenada on Sunday, Jan. 24.

The 39-year-old tourist identified as Jessia Colker from Georgia was traveling with her husband. The pair was visiting La Sagesse beach in St. David, when a man with a cutlass approached and threatened them.

The husband was able to escape but the woman's body was found minutes later in a nearby mangrove.

An eyewitness report from a British magazine journalist, Sue Hardy, indicated that there were about 30 people on the beach that day.

"Some guys were shouting and people were running," Hardy said. "At first we didn't know what was happening. But gradually rumors started spreading among the tourists."

According to Hardy, the husband had ran back to the La Sagesse resort where the couple was staying and alerted resort staff. The staff had gone out to the beach in search of Colker but found her dead. Rumors circulated that Colker was also raped.

"They said she was lying on the edge of the water," said Hardy, who could only speculate. "I don't know how she was killed - maybe the attacker, or attackers, held her down in the water and drowned her, I just don't know."

Police have identified a suspect, ex-convict Dave Martin Benjamin, who according to local news station MTV News Grenada turned himself into St. David Police early the next morning.

The atack is still under investigation.
