At the age of nine, Vasily fell ill while enjoying himself on an icy slide in the cold Russian winter. It turned out that hypothermia had done more damage to his health than was initially thought. Vasily developed chronic pyelonephritis, a kidney disease that deteriorated over the years. Finally, he found himself in need of dialysis. His life depends on regular procedures that take up a lot of his time. A kidney transplant has now become inevitable. The only question is whether to put it off until later or bite the bullet and undergo the operation.

Sklifosovsky Institute, aka Sklif: a name known to every Moscovite, and many Russians too. It is Europe's largest research and development facility for emergency medical care, complete with a hospital, research labs, surgery rooms, burn treatment facility and much more. Sklif's Emergency Intensive Care Unit is the clinic's busiest unit, with doctors and nurses tending to those whose lives are hanging by a thread. Here, battles against death are fought every minute of every day. It takes the best to win.
