Is there such a thing as the male pregnancy? Dr Jonica Newby follows three dads-to-be, testing their hormones and their humour -- as they make the transition to fatherhood.

Fatherhood -- it's something humans take for granted although it's actually very rare in the animal kingdom. Only 10% of mammals show paternal care - for most, a good dad is one who manages not to kill the kids. And that's not surprising - unlike birds, where each parent can feed the young, mammals have milk and that means mum carries the burden. So how come human dads help care for kids?

Well, new science is suggesting something mind boggling - that mothers are not the only ones that experience changes throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Fathers too are subtly primed, by their hormones, for parenting. And believe it or not, it might begin before the child is even born.

Dr Jonica Newby's Fatherhood edition of Catalyst is a fascinating look at an essential aspect of what makes us human.
