KORGAO, INDIA — Was a U.S. tourist lynched and left for dead in an Indian rice paddy?
An American citizen died after being pulled from a muddy rice field in a village in the western Indian province of Goa on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. Reports from Indian media claim that the U.S. citizen, identified as 30-year-old tourist Caitanya Holt from Ohio, allegedly got into a fight with several Nigerian man on a nearby beach before fleeing to the village of Korgao.
Reports say the tourist was acting erratically, and locals could not understand him. Holt may have been asking people to call the police, but an eyewitnesses quoted by local newspaper Navhind Times said the tourist was, “totally out of control and was running helter-skelter. He went to one house asking for tea ... He also stopped some two wheelers and try to grab the key.”
Holt's bizarre behavior may have led locals to believe he was a thief or threat of some kind and, again according to Navhind Times, he was then lynched by a mob of villagers. The paper also quoted allegations claiming police officers joined in the beating, although police denied that account.
After he either ran into or was taken into a rice paddy, it’s said the man drowned after falling into the sludge. Locals then pulled the tourist out of the mud with ropes and he was reportedly still alive for a brief time after being pulled out of the paddy.
U.S. consular officials in Mumbai say they will travel to Goa to investigate the incident while local authorities are also looking into the case. Holt's body was taken to the Goa Medical College and Hospital. His family has been informed, U.S. officials say.
