FLORENCE, ITALY — A 27-year-old Senegalese suspect who was detained in connection to the murder of American woman Ashley Olsen in Florence told police he pushed her after a fight, Italian television station TGCOM24 reported on Thursday.

Identified as Diaw Cheikh Tidiane, the suspect is reportedly known to police for drugs-related issues.

According to Il Secolo XIX, Ashley Olsen arrived at the Montecarla cocktail bar in the center of Florence early morning with some girlfriends. There, she had a fight with one of the women, which continued in the street after they left the club.

Olsen eventually left and walked toward her apartment on Santa Monaca street, about 20 minutes away from the club.

CCTV footage indicates that on the way home she met Tidiane and returned with him to her apartment.

According to La Repubblica, the autopsy revealed she had sexual intercourse before her death. She also did not resist strangulation, which happened either with a computer cable, a necklace or some kind of lace.

Italian news TV channel TGCOM24 on Thursday reported that Tidiane told police that he and Olsen had a fight after sex, and he pushed her and she hit her head. What appeared to be strangulation marks were caused by his attempt to lift her back up from the floor by the neck, he said.

Police are contemplating the possibility that Olsen's lack of resistance to strangulation was caused by a semi-comatose state induced by drugs. The prosecutor in charge, however, refused to say whether there were drugs in the apartment.

La Repubblica reported that Olsen may have other encounters with Tidiane in the past.

In their reporting, the Italian news outlets did not specify the exact sources of their new information.
