EU border agency Frontex 'needs more resources and more powers'

2016-01-09 1

Europe has lost control of its borders. With the new year came new deaths on European shores as yet more people, most of them fleeing war, tried to reach safety. Over one million people, mostly refugees, arrived in the EU last year. Some member states reacted by building fences to keep them out. Meanwhile, criminals have proven that they and their weapons can travel across borders, with the Paris attacks planned from Belgium and inspired from even further afield.

The European border agency Frontex has been accused of failing on both fronts and the EU is now looking at setting up a bigger, more powerful system that could intervene possibly even without the green light from national governments.
Frontex's Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri tells us more about the plan and reacts to the criticism levelled against his agency.
