PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia police officer was shot late Thursday night from point blank range.
Officer Jesse Hartnett, 33, was driving in a marked cruiser in West Philadelphia when a man flagged him down near the intersection of 60th and Spruce Streets around 11:45 p.m.
The man fired at least 13 times at Hartnett, emptying a 9mm handgun, later identified as a stolen police firearm. The incident was caught on surveillance video, which showed the suspect, at one point, having both arms inside the police vehicle.
"Shots fired! I'm shot! I'm bleeding heavily!" Hartnett can be heard yelling on police radio.
Hartnett was able to return fire hitting the suspect at least three times. The suspect was apprehended a short distance away.
"This is absolutely one of the scariest things I've ever seen," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said of video during a news conference.
The suspect has been identified as Edward Archer, 30, of Yeadon. According to Commissioner Ross, the suspect has given a full confession, saying he did it in the name of Islam. But, Archer's mother Mari Schaefer said in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer, "He's been hearing voices in his head."
Hartnett was shot three times in his left arm and suffered a broken arm and nerve damage. He underwent surgery at Penn Presbyterian Hospital shortly after the shooting and was out of surgery by early Friday morning. He's expected to make a full recovery.
Hartnett is a five-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police force. He previously worked for the East Lansdowne Police Department.
The FBI is now assisting in the investigation.
