[] I think Walt was more of an extreme version of a real character, whereas Hal was a unique creation who offered more of a freeform space for exploration. Comedy is harder than drama, and Hal shows why: there are infinite ways to play the character.
It's interesting to see somebody panick in a crawl space over the money he needs to survive. It's much cooler to see somebody writhe in pain because the thing he sees in his head just won't go up onto the paper, or because his son has done something so awful that typical punishment is not still an option.
