Actually I lived under dictatorship for the first 20 years of my life, and it is not fun at all. Sometimes it is scary how similar and familiar actions of US establishment, justice system, etc ... is to Eastern European regimes of 90's for example.
Believe it or not there is not much difference at all, we also had a right to vote, just like we have here, but unfortunately no right to elect or replace public servants.
Only difference is that people there were aware of it, and once the moment was right people did come out on the streets and in to the parliament building and establishment ended up in Hague War Tribunal.
Here not so much, and people who do deserve to be behind bars are comfortably sitting in their untouchable life long thrones feeding us same old bullshit about freedom, democracy, and American Dream ...

You shouldn't be maxing retirement savings if you have a short term spending goal like buying a house. You could take $10k out of a Roth IRA per person once per lifetime to buy a house, so it could be a way to keep some down payment savings in a retirement account, but the same is not true of a 401k.
It also makes no sense to keep cash in a checking account making 0 interest in a plan to pay off a loan accruing interest. Once you have a reasonable emergency fund, apply cash when it's available to whatever highest interest debt you have.
