PHOENIX — Netizens took to social media Tuesday after a white ball of light was seen streaking through the night sky above the Southwestern U.S. Initially thought to be a meteor, authorities later clarified that it was actually Russian rocket parts.
According to Space.com, Russia launched a SL-4 rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Monday. The unmanned spacecraft, named Progress 62, was carrying food, fuel, water, and equipment.
After detaching in space, the booster burned up as it reentered the atmosphere somewhere above Arizona around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, reported NBC News.
The bright light that resulted from the reentry was visible across Arizona, California, and Nevada, prompting speculation among residents as to what it might be. The display lasted around ten to twenty seconds before it appeared to break up.
The Progress 62 cargo ship, meanwhile, successfully docked at the International Space Station on Wednesday morning. About 2.8 tons of supplies are set to be unloaded aboard the space station, where the cargo ship will remain docked for about six months, reported Space. com.
