Opal was formed out of the ashes of the Dream Syndicate and the Rain Parade by Kendra Smith and guitarist David Roback.Their first singles and Ep were released as Clay Allison. "Happy nightmare baby "was released in early 1987. Within 12 months front woman Kendra Smith left the band and Roback tapped Hope Sandoval as the new vocalist of Opal, some weeks later the band metamorphosed to Mazzy Star.
