VATICAN CITY — Mother Teresa, the tiniest nun with the biggest of hearts, will officially be named a saint of the Catholic Church. Pope Francis recently approved a second miracle attributed to Mama T's intercession.
The same way your employer wants two forms of ID before they hire you, the Catholic church wants two miracles before canonizing you as a saint.
Monica Besra was the recipient of Mother Teresa's first miracle when a beam of light emitted from a picture of the nun, and the Indian woman was relieved of a stomach tumor.
The second miracle was healing multiple brain tumors in a Brazilian man who had prayed to the the deceased nun to intercede.
Despite living a life of serving the poor in Calcutta, Mother Teresa didn't avoid criticism. One of her biggest critics, Christopher Hitchens, called the nun "a fanatic, a fundamentalist, and a fraud," in his writings.
Pope Francis is expected to announce her sainthood on September 5 of next year, the 19th anniversary of her death.
