SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR — A man who survived at sea for 438 days is being sued by the family of his dead companion for allegedly eating the other man to stay alive, after the pair embarked on a doomed fishing trip in 2012, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Fisherman Jose Alvarenga, 36, survived 14 months at sea. He hired Ezequiel Cordoba, 22, for a two day fishing trip back in November of 2012 that turned into a nightmare for the two men. Their 25-foot boat lost communication and engine power. They had to survive by eating whatever they could catch, which consisted of raw fish, birds, and turtles.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Cordoba was a novice fisherman and not as resilient as the older and more experienced Alvarenga. Cordoba wouldn't eat certain foods that sustained Alvarenga, and he got very sick after eating a bird that they discovered had eaten a venomous yellow sea snake. According to Alvarenga's account of events, Cordoba died after about four months at sea, and he kept his companions dead body onboard the ship for six days for fear of being too lonely, before he finally tossed him overboard. Cordoba's body was never found.

Alvarenga eventually drifted to shore in the Marshall Islands where he was rescued by a couple living on one of the remote islands. He faced a lot of scrutiny, but Alvarenga passed a lie detector test that cleared his name, the Daily Telegraph reported. Cordoba's family is now suing Alvarenga for $1 million over accusations that he ate Cordoba to stay alive while the men were stranded at sea. Cordoba's family is also after half of the profits from Alvarenga's book about the horrific experience, which has only sold 1,500 copies in the United States, the Daily Telegraph reported.
