Denison Jayasooria: The Royal Commission Members Literally Horrified In Its Lack Of Implementation

2015-12-15 5

The Bar Council is renewing its call to the Malaysian Government to establish an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (“IPCMC”), as was recommended by the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysia Police in its report published in May 2005.

The Bar Council Task Force on IPCMC is holding a public forum entitled “Promoting Greater Police Accountability in Malaysia”. The purpose of this forum is to look into cases involving police shooting, and deaths in police custody, in Malaysia; the measures taken — or lack thereof — by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (“EAIC”) in addressing the situation; and the resulting need to set up an IPCMC.

List of panellists:

(1) Steven Thiru, President, Malaysian Bar;
(2) Dr Denison Jayasooria, Secretary General, Society for the Promotion of Human Rights (“PROHAM”);
(3) Ambiga Sreenevasan, President, National Human Rights Society (“HAKAM”), Past President, Malaysian Bar; and
(4) S Arutchelvan, Secretary-General, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (“PSM”).

Moderator: Firdaus Husni, Member, Bar Council Task Force on IPCMC; Co-Chairperson, Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee.
