All nearby roads and empty plots including a car scrapyard were inundated after a major 84 inch water pipeline was ripped open in the city’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal neighbourhood near Aziz Bhatti Park, officials said on Saturday.
According to MD Water Board Misbahud Din Fareed, Karachiites will suffer a shortage of about 100 million gallon water in a next couple of days due to the incident.
Water supply to Jamshed Quarter, Lyari, Clifton and Saddar among other neighbourhoods of the city would be disrupted, he said, adding that the full recovery would be possible in at least 48 hours.
The MD Water Board said the pipeline burst opened during the maintenance work, which was being carried out to fix the pipeline erosion.
He said it was an extraordinary sized pipeline, which will be difficult to replace.
