KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — Afghan forces suppressed a suicide attack in the nation's capital, the latest in a series of hits aimed at high-profile targets.
CNN reports that the Taliban has claimed responsibility for an assault on Friday targeting guest houses in the Sherpur area of Kabul, where a number of diplomatic offices are also located.
The attack began just after 6 p.m., when a car bomb was detonated near the Spanish embassy, creating an explosion that allowed three Taliban gunmen to open fire on security personnel in the area.
According to Reuters, members of the Afghan Crisis Response Unit arrived and engaged the attackers in an hours-long gunbattle that eventually led to the three gunman being killed.
A Spanish security officer died in the attack, while five Afghan police were killed or wounded. Another Spanish citizen was injured, along with nine Afghan civilians, as 47 other Afghans and foreigners were rescued from nearby buildings.
The incident comes just days after Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani sought support from a regional peace conference in Pakistan to revive talks to end the insurgency.
