Verizon to test sponsored data service

Verizon is reportedly mulling the idea of "sponsored data," which would allow wireless customers to use certain apps without eating into their monthly data allotment while the app maker or service provider picks up the tab.
Verizon executive vice president Marni Walden told Re/code that Verizon can set up sponsorships for "all or a portion" of the bytes carried across its network.
Walden said Verizon customers can expect to see it in early 2016.
Details are scant, but conceivably, Verizon could strike a deal with a service like Spotify whereby Spotify streaming did not count against a Verizon customer's monthly data cap.
Instead, Spotify paid Verizon.
