PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA — A private plane was flying into Palm Springs International Airport at around 3:20pm on December 5th. The landing didn't go as expected, because when the pilot tried to deploy the landing gear, it failed.
Recalling his years of training, the pilot was forced to attempt a belly landing. This landing method has the plane descend gently, getting just close enough to the pavement to be able to slide down the runway with a controlled impact. The danger of this emergency method is that the plane's bottom could heat up and create sparks, which could then cause the aircraft to blow up.
Luckily, it appears the captain knew what he was doing, and the small plane was able to ease onto the ground. Both the pilot and his lone passenger made it out of the air alive, and miraculously escaped uninjured.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene to handle any potential hazards after the daring landing, and within an hour of the ordeal, the runway was again being used for other flights. There's no word yet on what exactly caused the landing gear to fail. The names of the pilot and his passenger have not been released.
