Venezuela: 2/3 Majority Gives Opposition Sweeping Legislative Powers

2015-12-09 0

The final results from Venezuela’s Sunday elections show that the opposition MUD coalition has won a 2/3 majority in the National Assembly. The National Electoral Council has confirmed that the last two outstanding seats have gone to the opposition, giving it 109 votes. They can also expect support from the three indigenous lawmakers who are aligned with the rightwing. This would give them the 112 votes needed to call for a referendum to oust President Nicolas Maduro, to reappoint Supreme Court judges, or to call a special assembly to rewrite the Constitution. teleSUR
