On July 15, 2013, peasant and indigenous leader Tomas Garcia was killed by the Honduran military. Garcia, who was a leader of the Council of Indigenous Organizations, was organizing local communities against the Agua Zarc dam, a concession held by the Honduran company DESA, which would have threatened their land.
