CAIRO — El Sayad, a basement restaurant and nightclub in the Agouza area of Egypt’s capital was the scene of a deadly attack on Friday.
According to the Telegraph, two men who were reportedly denied entry at the Cairo establishment hours earlier returned around 6:30 a.m. with four others. The suspects threw Molotov cocktails at the club’s entrance, igniting a blaze that blocked the only way in and out of the underground venue.
Eleven men and five women, all employees of the club, were trapped inside. An Egyptian security official told Reuters that the victims likely died from burns or smoke inhalation. At least five others were injured.
While a number of Islamist attacks struck the Egyptian capital this year, officials do not believe the El Sayad nightclub bombing is motivated by terrorism, and are treating it as a crime, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
Egyptian officials are currently searching for the suspects, one of whom is believed to be a disgruntled former employee, reports Reuters.
