The Deosai National Park (DNP) is located in between Skardu, Gultari, Kharmang and Astore Valley, in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), region of Northern Pakistan. The average height of DNP is about 13497 ft above sea level. Deosai means 'the land of Giants'. Deosai Plateau is the second highest plateau in the world after the Chang Tang in Tibet. In Balti language, Deosai is called Byarsa meaning 'summer place'. It is locally called غبیارسہ Ghbiarsa referring to "Summer's Place" by Balti people because it is only accessible in summer.
The park covers an area of 3,000 square kilometers (1,200 sq mi). It is well known for its rich flora and fauna.
Deosai is accessible from Skardu District in the north, Gultari Kharmang district in the south-east, and the Astore District in the west. Deosai is located approximately 30 km from Skardu city and it is the shortest route to visit Deosai. Many tourists visit deosai via Skardu as it takes 1 hour ride to reach Deosai Top via Sadpara Lake Skardu. Another route is from Astore valley via Chilim. These two routes you can reach DNP by good 4x4 vehicle otherwise there are hiking treks from Shila valley and the other route is called Burgi la via Tsoq Kachura valley Skardu. The DNP was established way back in 1993 to protect the survival of the Himalayan brown bear and its habitat. Having long been a prize kill for poachers and hunters, the bear now has a hope for survival in DNP, where its number has increased from 20 in 1993 to about 50 plus in 2015. In 1993, Himalayan Wildlife Project was founded with a substantial financial support from international environmental concerns. But the brown bear is still under threat because of inroads to his habitat by the local Balti Sheppard’s who graze their livestock in the remote valleys of DNP.Apart from the Himalayan Brown bear DNP is home to the Himalayan ibex, red fox, golden marmot locally called Phia, Grey wolf, the Ladakh urial, the snow leopard, and over 124 resident and migratory birds. Birds in the park include the golden eagle, lammergeier, griffon vulture, laggar falcon, peregrine falcon, kestrel, sparrow hawk and snow cock.
