MARRERO, LOUISIANA — A family of four was found dead on Sunday morning inside a house in Marrero, Louisiana, in what police believe to be a murder-suicide case.
The bodies of David Mata, 46, and Kelli Fabre Mata, 40, together with their two children Caden, 4, and Liam, 2, were found inside the house at around 11 a.m.
Fabre's daughter, who had just returned from a hunting trip, entered the house and found the body of her mother and of her step-father in the living room. She immediately called the police without yet knowing that the bodies of her step-brothers were in their separate bedrooms, the Times Picayune reported.
According to NBC News, the house hadn't been broken into and no suicide note was left. Investigators believe David Mata first stabbed his wife and children, then stabbed himself. It is unclear how Mata killed himself, but a straight-blade knife was found under his body along with stab wounds.
Mata, from Malaga, Spain, married Fabre in 2012, after he and his first wife divorced. Their landlord Jason Bordelon told the Times-Picayune they were a "picture-perfect" family, but legal records paint a different picture.
David Mata pleaded guilty In 2010 to assaulting Fabre. In 2002 he pleaded guilty to possessing 1,000 anabolic steroid tablets.
As for Fabre, in 2011 she was charged for writing a $700 bad check check to a drug store in Lafitte, Louisiana.
