Tiger and goat unlikely friends at Russia zoo

An unlikely friendship has developed between a rare Amur tigress and a billy goat called Timur, once destined as the tigress' breakfast, at the Primorsky Safari Park in eastern Russia.

Timur was released into the tigress' enclosure at the safari park, but instead of hunting and eating the goat, she seemed glad to have company.

Video shot by staff at the safari park shows Timur following the tigress around her large compound, occasionally grazing on the sparse grass still visible in the Russian winter snow.

The two animals have so far lived together harmoniously and Timur seems to be the dominant character, taking the tigress' sheltered bed and leaving the big cat out in the cold.

Park staff also held an online poll to choose a new name for the tigress - who is to be called 'Ussuri'.

The World Wildlife Fund's Russian branch has warned that if the tigress were to become really hungry, she would probably go ahead and eat her best friend.

Staff responded saying they are taking care to make sure the tigress is fed regularly so that her new-found friend survives.
