Pampore near Srinagar is the hotbed of saffron farming in India. It produces the highest output of saffron in the country. More than 3000 acres of land is under saffron cultivation. The flower is called Crocus Sativus and is purple-violet in colour. The saffron harvest season begins towards the end of October and lasts for a fortnight.
If it doesn't rain, then the flower picking is done in the morning. At this time of the year the fields are painted purple with the flowers and it is an unforgettable site.
