CAIRO — A team of scientists have discovered a thermal anomaly in the Great Pyramids of Giza using high tech infrared thermography scanners as part of the Scan Pyramids Mission, Discovery news reported.
After a two-week project which included thermally scanning the pyramids at sunrise and sunset to see how the temperatures changed, they found thermal anomalies in all of the pyramids.
According to Discovery News, the most "impressive" find was that the temperature usually varied between 0.1 and 0.5 degrees, but the data showed a 6 degree differential between neighboring stone blocks on the eastern side of the Cheops Pyramid.
"This anomaly is really quite impressive and it's just in front of us, at the ground level," Mehdi Tayoubi, founder of the Paris-based Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute, told Discovery News.
According to a report from The Guardian, project research is expected to continue until next year. Tayoubi added that they will build models to test the hypotheses about the temperature differences, which could be explained by cavities in the limestone, or the use of different types of material.
