ADAMS COUNTY, IDAHO — The family of an Idaho rancher who was shot by two sheriff's deputies last week vows to pursue claims against Adams County for what they say is a 'completely unjustified' killing.
Jack Yantis, 62, died last week on US 95, a few miles north of Council, Idaho. Events were set in motion when a car struck one of the rancher's bulls. Sheriff's deputies planned to put down the bull, which was charging people at the scene of the crash, when Yantis arrived with his family's rifle.
The incident took place on the evening of November 1. Yantis arrived at the scene after receiving a call about his angry bull. His nephew told the Idaho Statesman that as Yantis parked his all-terrain vehicle near the bull, two deputies opened fire on the animal with pistols and at least one semi automatic rifle.
Hoping to kill the bull more humanely, Yantis stood four feet away from the bull, and aimed his rifle at the bull's head. In statements provided to the Idaho Statesman, Yantis family members say that just as Yantis was about to pull the trigger, a deputy grabbed him by the shoulder and spun him around, at which point his rifle accidentally discharged. The deputies responded by fatally shooting Yantis in the abdomen and chest.
Despite all the shooting, the sheriff's deputies failed to humanely put down the rancher's bull, which laid in the road for hours before suffocating on his own blood.
