OMAHA, NEBRASKA — A 33-year-old woman snuck into a zoo on Halloween night and tried to pet a tiger, a foolish decision that nearly ended with the woman almost losing the fingers on her left hand.
At approximately 4 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, Jacqueline Eide somehow managed to creep into Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo undetected. Eide then found her way to the zoo's Cat Complex and reportedly approached Mai, an 18-year-old, three-legged Malayan tiger.
When Eide stuck her left hand in the tiger pen, the tiger made her pay for it. Mai caused severe trauma with a bite that almost cost Eide the use of her fingers. A friend, who has yet to be identified but who was accompanying Eide, drove the bleeding woman to a nearby hospital. Emergency room report the woman appeared intoxicated when she arrived.
Mai lost her leg to a poaching trap when she was two years old and has since been under the care of humans. As a result, her handlers say she's usually pretty friendly around people and include her in many regular tour demonstrations for zoo guests. But Mai, like most of us, didn't seem to appreciate a stranger breaking into her home at night.
Eide's been cited by police for criminal trespassing. This is just the latest in a string of run-ins she's had with the law. She served time in prison for her third DUI in 2011, and this year alone, has received criminal convictions for drunk driving, graffiti, disturbing the peace, obstruction of justice and shoplifting. Police are currently examining zoo camera footage to uncover how Eide managed to bypass zoo security.
