Maldives president says deputy tried to kill him with boat bomb, arrests him for treason

MALE, MALDIVES — Maldivian president Yameen Abdul Gayoom has arrested his deputy Ahmed Adeeb on charges of high treason, accusing the vice president of orchestrating a failed assassination attempt last month.

The attempt on Yameen's life occurred on September 28, when a blast rocked a speedboat carrying the president and his wife as they returned returned from pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Video of the incident shows the boat approaching the main jetty in Male when an explosion could be heard.

An investigation revealed an explosive had been placed under the seat normally used by Yameen. His wife Fathimath Ibrahim occupied the seat at the time of the blast. She was injured along with two others.

Following the blast, two soldiers boarded the boat. They were later arrested for tampering with evidence and bomb making materials were allegedly recovered from their homes. Yamen said an investigation linked these two soldiers to Adeeb.

Adeeb has denied any links to the explosion.

The vice president assumed office in July at the age of 33. Yameen cleared the path for his protege, sacking a previous vice president and lowering minimum age requirements from 35 to 30. Adeeb previously held the position of tourism minister.
