Runaway illegal pet kangaroo hops around New York City neighborhood

NEW YORK — A runaway kangaroo named Buster caused quite the commotion Saturday morning after it got loose and hopped around a New York neighborhood until police arrived to help capture it, according to a New York Daily News report.

The 1 and a 1/2-year-old marsupial was reportedly brought over to Staten Island by its upstate New York owner, Giovanni Schirripa, 33, on Friday night so he could be shown off to his owner's friends.

Initially kept in a backyard enclosure, Buster escaped after the enclosure's gate was left unlatched.

He made his way into a nearby parking lot and apparently got a chance to finally experience true freedom. Sadly, it didn't last and police arrived within 15 minutes to spoil the fun.

Authorities surrounded the 3-foot-tall animal, but Schirripa reportedly arrived just in the knick of time to explain everything.

While it's illegal to keep kangaroos in New York City, Schirripa, an apparent exotic animal enthusiast who's previously owned a peacock and even a zebra as pets, escaped scot-free and wasn't charged or issued a ticket.

"It looks like it's legal to possess a kangaroo where this man is from," a police source told the Daily News. "Since he was visiting the area and was returning home today, there was no violation."
