That's no moon! NASA may have found alien megastructures circling strange star

NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT — Scientists are striving to explain a recently discovered star and what its surroundings could mean for the universe.

Between the Cygnus and Lyra constellations sits a peculiar star named KIC 8462852. Light patterns from this star suggest it is old. However, it is surrounded by debris like a younger star, reports Popular Mechanics.

What this is, is what scientists are trying to figure out. In a recent paper submitted to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, a team of scientists, led by Tabetha Boyajian, a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University, speculate the debris may be an asteroid belt or comets, the Atlantic reports.

However, in another scenario, some suggest it might be extraterrestrial megastructures.
According to Popular Mechanics, extraterrestrial intelligence researchers at the University of California at Berkeley are drafting a proposal to point a large radio telescope at the star and listen for signs that may indicate technological activity. Another possibility is that the data may contain some mistakes.
