BUFFALO, NEW YORK — Police choked a man while arresting him after he swallowed what turned out to be 39 bags of crack-cocaine on Wednesday in Buffalo, New York, WKBW reported.
The arrest of Parris Stevens, 29, was caught on camera by eyewitness Ariana Simpson. According to WKBW, Simpson posted the video on Facebook, and it went viral, garnering anti-police sentiments from viewers who didn't know that Stevens had just swallowed the illegal drugs. Police officials claimed that the officer was trying to rescue Stevens from choking on the drugs and dying.
According to WKBW, after being arrested, Stevens was taken to the hospital where he vomited up the bag of drugs. He allegedly told police: "Got it. It's out. I told y'all I could throw it up. That's the largest amount I ever swallowed." He also allegedly told officers how much he had swallowed: "Like, three grams. I ain't going to lie. I sell."
Stevens was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a narcotic drug, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. He has a prior arrest record including two arrests from this summer for criminal possession of a controlled substance and acting in a manner to injure a child less than 17.
"From the early review that has been done at this point, it seems like the action of the police officer potentially could have saved the life of this suspect," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told WKBW.
