Saint Lucia: CARICOM Countries Launch Disaster Risk Programs

Hurricane season is always a tense time for residents of small island states of the Caribbean. As much as 90% of their economic activity is coastal, and 60% of the people live along the coast, where they are vulnerable to rising seas and other impacts of climate change. Climatologists and meteorologists say it is crucial to monitor and build resilience to the impacts of a range of weather events. Just this week Santa Lucia launched a project aimed at mitigating flooding, and a number of CARICOM projects are underway as part of their Disaster Risk Vulnerability Program.
