In September, the United States Environmental Protection Agency announced that Volkswagen had installed software in its diesel cars that cheated the government's emissions tests.
The software is called "defeat devices", and its main aim is to hide the fact that Volkswagen's diesel cars emit high level of air pollutants on the road.
The study is published in the journal Environmental Research Letters.
Excess emissions of Volkswagen's fleet will also directly contribute to 31 new cases of Chronic Bronchitis, and additional 30 plus hospital admissions due to cardiac and respiratory problems, the study's estimates suggest.
In short, these cars not only kill innocent lives, they may also affect the nation's economy.
