Venezuela Scores Major Strides in Education

Ten years ago UNESCO congratulated Venezuela for successfully eliminating illiteracy. Under Hugo Chavez, the Bolivarian Revolution cut the illiteracy rate from 9% to 1% in just five years. Spending on education jumped from 2.1% of GDP in 1996 to 7%. The new Bolivarian Constitution recognizes education as a basic human right for the entire population. In the past 14 years, university enrollment is up 300%. The government is currently working to improve scientific and technical education. teleSUR
