The city of Mysuru has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival and the festivities are an elaborate affair, attracting a large audience, including foreigners. For locals, it is a common sight to witness the city being scrubbed clean to welcome huge crowds that throng Mysore for the 10-day festival. The city is bathed in lights and the aroma of celebrations hangs in the air. The Dasara festival normally falls either in the month of September or October with Vijayadashami being the last auspicious day. The jumboo savari (Mysuru Dasara Procession) is held on the streets of Mysuru. The golden chariot of Godess Chamundeshwari, weighing 750kgs in gold, is placed atop a decorated main elephant. Colourful tableaux, dance groups, music bands, decorated elephants, horses and camels form a part of the procession which starts from the Mysore Palace and culminates at a place called Bannimantap where the Banni tree is worshipped. Mysore Dussehra is a festival everybody need to witness once in your life.
