Guatemala: Jimmy Morales Wins Presidency Hands Down

2015-10-27 2

In Guatemala’s Sunday elections, comedian turned politician Jimmy Morales captured 68.5% of the vote, more than twice that of his center-left contender Sandra Torres. His win comes as former President Otto Perez Molina and former Vice President Roxana Baldetti are in jail on corruption charges. Torres recognized her opponent’s triumph and said important agreements must be reached in order to solve Guatemala’s problems. Voter turnout was especially low in indigenous areas, where people say they do not feel represented by any of the candidates in what they consider illegitimate elections. teleSUR
