Havergal Brian is one of the most prolific, yet most unknown, British composers. He was mainly a composer of symphonies, but also commanded other genres such as opera or symphonic poems much in spite he remained largely self-taught. His Tenth Symphony is part of a symphonic trilogy concerning marching rhythms, whether funereal or triumphal, following the steps of Mahler and Elgar. Its philosophical purposes are on the other hand, post-existentialist, as Brian sought to portray the tragic and perennial struggle of mankind’s will against Fate and the forces of nature.
Havergal Brian es un prolífico, pero desconocido, compositor británico. Principalmente fue un sinfonista, pero también dominaba géneros como la ópera y los poemas sinfónicos muy a pesar de ser autodidacta. Su Décima Sinfonía es parte de una trilogía sinfónica que se ocupa de ritmos marciales, ya sean fúnebres o triunfales, misma que sigue los pasos de Mahler y Elgar. Sus ideales filosóficos son por el contrario, post-existencialistas, ya que Brian intentó mostrar la perenne y trágica lucha de la humanidad contra el Destino y las fuerzas naturales.
