97% of people living in Indian Kashmir are Muslim, a significant part of them feeling more attached to neighbouring Pakistan than to India itself. However, with cash incentives, housing and jobs, India's government is now actively promoting the return of Hindu communities to the region after many fled fighting between Muslim separatists and the Indian army in the 1990s.
