The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has been trying a different method. Since the program's inception six years ago, deputies are routinely assigned to walk in neighborhoods and lift the door handles of cars. If a car's locked, they walk away. If not, the deputy cracks the door open and slips a bright yellow flier on the driver's seat that reads, "Be sure it's secure, lock it up!" before locking the car and closing the door.

St. Petersburg lawyer Don Simon has raised questions about the legality of the program and asked Sheriff Bob Gualtieri to stop it, citing that deputies are trespassing because they don't have probable cause to open the cars.

"I think it smells bad, and it's a slippery slope," Simon said. "You're definitely overstepping the fine line of what's legal and what's not."

Gualtieri said the program will continue, adding that deputies are not trespassing because they are not entering and searching cars.

"There is nothing going on here," the sheriff said. "It's a crime-preventing thing. We're literally lifting the door handle, clicking the button, putting the card on the seat and moving on."
