Isuzu KB 300 D-TEQ LX 4×4 DC

To test the Isuzu KB300’s 4x4 capabilities, I decided to do a camping trip to the Namaqualand National Park. On arrival at the southern entrance (Groen River Gate), we were advised to drop tyre pressures to 1,3 bar, but, knowing the double cab was equipped with a semi-chunky tread pattern courtesy of its Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA tyres, I decided to leave them fully inflated. We had only one “moment” when I had to stop to let another vehicle squeeze by, after which the KB wouldn’t budge in the sand. A brief reverse to get the tyres out of the depressions before slipping it gently in first gear did the trick.

Keeping momentum up and over the 29 km of soft beach sand, we reached Skuinsbaai Noord, a small clearing of just two campsites (there’s a windbreak, fireplace and long-drop toilet, but no water). It was just my two children and myself, so for a bed I merely dropped the KB’s tailgate for added length, closed the canopy and draped a groundsheet over the opening.

The next day, we headed through the park with no-one in sight most of the time. One characteristic of all KBs is the excellent ride quality. And that with leaf springs at the back. Space on the rear bench seat is great and the cushions can be folded away for the conveying of goods.

We covered over a hundred kilometres of gravel roads on this trip and, unfortunately, the Mystique canopy began to move around a bit as the rubber beading sealing the canopy to the load bay came adrift at the rearmost corners. Loosening the canopy and tucking the rubber back in solved the problem – but only until the next gravel road. Other than that niggle, it is a superior quality canopy with interior light, sliding windows, tinting and roof rails. The spoiler is a bit superfluous, however…

Fuel consumption on the Namaqua trip came to 9,2 litres/100 km.
