Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos assured a crowd gathered outside the United Nations General Assembly in New York that the recently signed peace agreement with the FARC guerrillas will succeed in ending the conflicts. He said he envisions a future in which the FARC will lay down their guns and join the mainstream political process. Last month Santos and the top FARC commander pledged to ender their 50-year war within the next six months, sealing their pact with a handshake that is likely to stand as a lasting image. teleSUR
