New Orlean's own Rebirth Brass Band in action at an outdoor show in San Francisco circa August 2000. I first stumbled across these guys on a New Years Eve 1990 when they barnstormed The Paradise Lounge impromptu after opening for the Grateful Dead across the bay in Oakland. They were promoting their debut release "Feel Like Funkin' It Up" issued on Rounder Records and this clip is a reprise of that tune done some ten years latah. I have since caught them close to a dozen times, mostly in their hometown of New Orleans at the Maple Leaf whenever I am lucky enough to be there.
This joyous tune was captured here outdoors at San Francisco's late great North Beach Jazz Festival presented by Sunset Promotions. This festival fell victim to increased NIMBYism, as the wealthy and arrogant Telegraph Hill Dwellers pressured city officials to clamp down on live outdoor music gatherings in public parks, and eventually made the venture fiscally impossible.
