Embattled Texas athletic director Steve Patterson resigned on Tuesday, the university's president announced.
Patterson and school president Gregory Fenves "mutually agreed" to end his tenure after just 22 months on the job amid growing unrest among fans and boosters over his leadership of the nation's wealthiest athletic department.
"This has been a decision that had been building over recent weeks," Fenves said.
Patterson was hired by Texas in November 2013 after a brief but successful stint as athletic director at Arizona State.
But he quickly caused uproar among Texas fans over his handling of matters ranging from ticket prices to the Longhorns' struggling football program.
