Hundreds of young girls have been treated in hospital in the Afghan province of Herat, after a suspected toxic gas attack on three separate schools.
Special security measures are now in place at girls’ schools in the province.
“We were in class,” one girl told reporters,“when our teacher came and told us that gas had been sprayed in the classroom. We went out of the class and few minutes later we felt much worse and they brought us to hospital.”
The latest in a series of attacks
These attacks come after five similar ones over the last few weeks.
Under the Taliban rule, girls and women were banned from education and the workplace.
Some ultra-conservative elements of Afghan society continue to oppose education for girls.
