The coffins of two toddlers and their mother who drowned trying to reach safety in Greece and a new life in Europe have been taken back to Syria for burial.
The funerals took place in the cemetery in the mainly Kurdish town of Kobani.
Having buried his wife and two sons, Abdullah Kurdi spoke to the media: “The Canadian government refused asylum for us. My sister, who lives there, asked me what I wanted to do. I told her the only solution was to go with the people smugglers to Germany or another European country.”
Images of 3-year-old Aylan’s lifeless body washed up on the shore prompted distress and outrage when featured in newspapers around the world.
Why are people fleeing Kobani?
Kobani became the symbol of Kurdish resistance in January, when an siege by Islamic State militants was ended.
But a renewed IS offensive in June prompted thousands of inhabitants to flee the city and tak their chances elsewhere.
