Mr. Tan Soy Kiang is a 70yearold man with an old spinal injury that keeps his body bent at an almost 90 degree angle. Despite being well past the retirement age he’s still working two manual labor jobs.
That’s because Mr. Tan was conned into believing he owed a debt to the government.
Two unnamed women, ages 65 and 69, convinced Mr. Tan that he owed the government money and that he needed to pay it off through them. The amount was unspecified but Mr. Tan handed over his USD $53,000 retirement savings and has been giving the women his weekly paycheck for the last 15 years.
It wasn’t until Mr. Tan’s niece returned from Australia that she discovered her uncle was being scammed by these two heartless witches.
Mr. Tan’s niece confronted the two women in a video where they reportedly confessed to scamming the old man and the niece has provided a copy of the video as evidence in a police report. In the video the two women promised to begin paying back the moneya whopping total of over USD $400,000but only in USD $500 a month ments.
Police arrested one woman for fraud and have questioned the other one. If convicted of fraud they can serve a maximum of 10 years per incident and every time Mr. Tan handed over his paycheck is considered one incident. Since the two women have been conning him for more than 15 years that’s a lot of time if they’re found guilty.
Mr. Tan’s niece has moved her ailing uncle in with her and says she’ll be taking care of him from now on. He’s earned the rest.
