More than five years after his passing, the King of Pop remains royalty among postmortem earners, pulling in triple-digit millions every full year since his death. Much of his cash comes from two Cirque du Soleil shows—Immortal, now one of the ten top grossing tours of all time, and One, a permanent show in Las Vegas—as well as his half of the Sony/ATV publishing empire and his own Mijac catalogue. His latest posthumous release, Xscape, debuted at No. 2 on the charts earlier this year.
2. Elvis Presley
The King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley earns from Graceland admissions, licensing and merchandizing and a Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show. A perennial favorite, his Facebook page has more than 12 million likes.
3. Charles Schulz
Schulz's most famous creation, The Peanuts, is getting a makeover with a 3-D movie hitting theaters next November. The gang already has a huge following overseas.
4. Elizabeth Taylor
Taylor represents the last of Hollywood's glamour era. Her perfume line is sill a best seller and her estate has only begun to make use of her image. Expect to see a lot more from Taylor in the coming years.
5. Bob Marley
The reggae legend's postmortem earnings are up $2 million in 2014 thanks to a diversified range of ventures: Marley Beverage Company (including Marley Coffee and a “relaxation drink” known as Marley’s Mellow Mood) and House of Marley (producer of eco-friendly audio and lifestyle products). Marley’s estate this year also launched Marley Apparel, a lifestyle clothing line designed by Bob’s eldest daughter, Cedella Marley. Marley has sold more than 75 million albums in the past two decades.
6. Marilyn Monroe
Authentic Brand Group, which bought the rights to Monroe in 2011, has been working hard to strengthen her brand. There is now a line of Monroe lingerie to go along with her successful clothing line at Macy's.
7. John Lennon
More than 33 years after the songwriter and crooner was killed in New York City, his estate continues to earn through iTunes sales, a Beatles Cirque du Soleil show and from licensing deals with the likes of Cisco and Mont Blanc. Though the band’s records have yet to be made available on streaming service Spotify, Lennon’s 8-album solo discography was added in October. His killer was recently denied parole for the eighth time.
8. Albert Einstein
Einsetin continues to corner the market on "smart." In addition to things like posters and t-shirts, the scientist now has his own line of tablets. Specially designed for student scientists, they come complete with built in sensors to measure things like heart rate, humidity and temperature.
9. Theodor Geisel
With classic books like The Cat In The Hat and The Lorax, Dr. Seuss is still a best-selling author bringing in millions for his estate every year.
10. Bruce Lee
Fans of the martial arts expert can now pretend to be Lee in EA Sports' newest version of its UFC game. Lee also appeared in an ad for Mazda this year.
11. Steve McQueen
McQueen and cars go together like peanut butter and jelly. Porsche is cashing in this year on the actor's image with a new line of McQueen clothes including a $500 racing jacket.
12. Bettie Page
With her severe bangs and jet-black hair, Page had one of the most iconic looks of all time. Now a new generation is adopting that look and sales of Page-inspired clothing is on the rise. Look for a Vegas show with a hologram Page in 2015.
13. James Dean
Dead lived fast and died way too young. His image now stands for all things youthful and rebellious. Dean still does big busines in the souvenir world but fancier brands, like Dolce and Gabbana, have adopted him.
