When languages evolve, it's important that scholars and dictionaries keep up. The internet has spawned a new crop of words for stuff, and while you may not like all of them, some of them are really clever combos that seem like they might actually be useful!
Many of these words come from urbandictionary.com, which is basically a dictionary of modern slang. Their site is probably the most complete dictionary of modern slang, but it's also full chock-full of nonsense.
Most of these words are portmanteaus, which are what you get when you mash both the sounds and meanings of two words together to get a new one. Did you know, for example, that the word 'smog' is a portmanteau (smoke and fog)? 'Brunch' (breakfast and lunch) is another one that is becoming more and more popular, although it's been around for a while. And if you're eating your brunch with a spork, then that's a portmanteau double-whammy.
The amazing thing about portmanteaus is that you can take any combination of words and mash them together to create something hilarious or actually profound. The Urban Dictionary is full of nonsense as well as applicable terms that I use on a day to day basis. It’s also important to remember as a society that is constantly growing and coming up with new ideas as well as new words.
We’ll always have our sophisticated intelligent words that hold the same timeless meaning throughout history, but with our ever changing world I think it’s more than acceptable that our vocabulary changes too. People have been using the portmanteaus such as “spork” or “brunch” being one of the most popular terms as of late.
It would be pretty awesome to see some of these other beautiful collaborations used outside the Urban Dictionary. Obviously there are some Urban Dictionary words that probably should not be used frequently based on the terminology. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a lot of good ones either.
