There were full military honours for the funeral of a soldier killed in protests in Kiev on Monday.
Ihor Hebrin was a conscript in Ukraine’s National Guard.
The 24-year-old died after a grenade was thrown at the security services.
His battalion chief, Volodymyr Bohachuk, told reporters the only explosions in the centre of Kiev should be fireworks, not grenades. “The place for those is on the frontline,” he said, “not in the heart of Ukraine.”
What happened on Monday?
Two other members of the National Guard were fatally injured during violent clashes in front of the parliament building.
Dozens of people were wounded.
Tensions boiled over after deputies backed draft legislation granting more autonomy to separatist regions in eastern Ukraine.
Officials say 18 people remain in custody in connection with the unrest, including the person alleged to have thrown the grenade.
